Regenerative medicine is the process of replacing or regenerating human cells, tissues or organs to restore or establish structures and functions absent or lost due to congenital defects, ageing, disease or damage. Due to advancement in medical science, it is possible to understand the human genome (a full set of chromosomes, all the inheritable traits of an organism.), thus using body's own mechanisms to heal itself.
The obvious question arises here that how to do that. This is all possible due to the stem cells. Stems cells have the ability to divide and create an identical copy of themselves. This process can continue if necessary till the formation of fully functioning tissue types such as liver, lungs or skin. This replicating nature is called self-renewal.
The FDA (U S Food and Drug Administration) defines cell therapy as, “The prevention, treatment, cure or mitigation of disease or injuries in humans by the administration of autologous, allogeneic or xenogeneic cells that have been manipulated or altered ex vivo.” taken from Pall Corporation .
The goal of cell therapy, overlapping with that of regenerative medicine, is to repair, replace or restore damaged tissues or organs.
Cell therapy may take the form of a stem cell transplant such as a hematopoietic cell transplant that is used to restore the blood and immune system of patients with leukemia, lymphoma or other blood disorders.
But the term stem self itself represents the basic three types of cells
1. The Totipotent stem cells
2. The Adult stem cells
3. The Pluripotent Stem cells
The Totipotent stem cells are known as the “master” cells of the body because they have the capacity to differentiate into the 216 specialized cell types that comprise the human body plus the placenta. A fertilized egg is an example of a totipotent cell.
The Adult stem cells are thought to exist in most of the body’s tissues such as the blood, brain, liver, intestine or skin. These cells are committed to becoming cells from their tissue of origin, but they still have the broad ability to become any one of these cells.
Like stem cells of the bone marrow, for example, can give rise to any of the red or white cells of the blood system. Stem cells in the brain can form all the neurons and support cells of the brain, but can’t form non-brain tissues.
The Pluripotent stem cells are either embryonic or induced Pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. Embryonic stem cells exist only at the earliest stages of embryonic development and go on to form all the cells of the adult body. In humans, these cells no longer exist after about five days after conception. Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent, meaning they have the ability to differentiate into any of the 200 plus cell types required by the body except the fetus.
The induced Pluripotent stem (iPS) cell is taken from any tissue from a child or adult that has been genetically modified to behave like an embryonic stem cell. As the name implies, these cells are pluripotent, which means that they have the ability to form all adult cell types.
The sole aim of Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine is to apply the principles of regenerative medicine to repair or replace diseased tissues and organs.
Dr.Anthony Atala, is director of the Institute and his team have been able to produce the first lab-grown organs, a bladder, the artificial urinary bladder to be implanted into a human.
They have also been able to harvest stem cells from the amniotic fluid of pregnant women. These stems cells are pluripotent, meaning they can be manipulated to differentiate into various types of mature cells that make up nerve, muscle, bone, and other tissues while avoiding the problems of tumor formation.

ReplyDeleteMake me a promise Phyna, my mother said. "Promise me you won't put me in a home or make me live with one of your sisters". It was a joke at the time when my mom was just starting to forget things. 07/10/2020 was the hardest day of my life. Watching my mom talk to herself, packing her things 4-5 times a day, saying she has to go home. It was heartbreaking.
